Apple announced last week at the WWDC that Mac OS X Lion will be available in the Mac App Store by June. But how does that effect users that are used to install OS X with an installation DVD? Quite simple just create one, if you follow the following steps you will make a perfect OS X Lion installation DVD, that doesn’t require OS X 10.6.x to be installed.
If you start downloading OS X Lion from the Mac App Store, it will show up as a installer on your hard disk. By double clicking on the installer, you will be shown the installation screen of OS X Lion. Users that are familiar with Xcode 4 know how this works, as Xcode is also being distributed via the Mac App Store.
It is also possible to start a new installation of OS X Lion when you perform a restart. Just hold down option⌥ key while rebooting, until your hear the “boing!” sound, you will now start the boot menu. Here you are able to boot from the ‘Recovery’ partition, which contains the fully automatic installation of Mac OS X Lion.
But you are probably here to see how you can create a bootable OS X Lion installation disc, which can come in handy when your hard drive has crashed or when a reinstallation of OS X Lion is longer possible using the ‘Recovery’ partition.
Let’s get started creating an installation DVD. First ‘Control + Click’ on the installation file and select ‘Show Package Contents’. There will now open a new ‘Finder’ window, and you have to be looking for the file ‘InstallESD.dmg’, which can be found in the SharedSupport folder and copy this file to your desktop.
Now open ‘Disk Utility’ and click on the ‘Burn’ button and select the file that you have just placed on your desktop called ‘installESD.dmg’. Insert a blank DVD into your DVD burner and after a few minutes you have a perfect OS X Lion installation DVD.
- Download Mac OS X Lion through the Mac App Store (~4GB)
- Navigate to your application folder and right click on the OS X Lion installation file and choose ‘Show Package Contents’
- Navigate to the ‘SharedSupport’ folder and find ‘InstallESD.dmg’
- Copy the ‘InstallESD.dmg’ file to your desktop
- Start ‘Disc Utility’ and place a blank DVD in your DVD-drive
- Press the ‘Burn’ button and select the ‘InstallESD.dmg’ file that can be found on your desktop
- After the burning of the DVD is done, you can reboot your Mac and start the Mac OS X Lion installation DVD
